Frequently Asked Questions
The short answer is no. A deposition, hearing, meeting reporter does not need to have a license or any certification at all to work in North Carolina. A reporter in the state court system does need to have a national certification.
Freelance reporters (non-court court reporters) must be notaries public in order to offer the oath to a witness. This is the sole requirement for taking the record in this state.
YES, you can! If you would like the services of a realtime reporter, we do ask that you request that on booking AND that you provide the firm with pleadings (text documents) and prior transcripts as well as any pertinent spellings ahead of the assignment date. Realtime is a team sport and we hope that you will also be conscious of making an excellent record. Taking breaks frequently, speaking clearly and slowly, and providing assistance to the reporter during the day will improve this service dramatically. Also, please be aware that this is an added service charge and does require the official transcript to be ordered as well.
